چکیده

liquid crystal, colloid, SAXS Suspensions of three different clays in K15, a thermotropic liquid crystal have been studied by optical microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering. The three clays were Claytone AF, a surface treated natural montmorillonite, Laponite RD, a synthetic hectorite and mined Sepiolite. The Claytone and Laponite were sterically stabilized whereas Sepiolite formed a relatively stable suspension in K15 without any surface treatment. Micrographs of the different suspensions revealed that all three suspensions contained large scale structures. The nature of these aggregates was investigated using small angle X-ray scattering. For the clays with sheetlike particles, Claytone and Laponite, the flocs contain a mixture of stacked and single platelets. The basal spacing in the stacks was independent of particle concentration in the suspension and the phase of the solvent. The number of platelets in the stack and their percentage in the suspension varied with concentration and the aspect ratio of the platelets. The lath shaped Sepiolite did not show any tendency to organize into ordered structures. Here the aggregates are networks of randomly oriented single rods.

Liquid crystal phases in the aqueous colloids of size-controlled fluorinated layered clay mineral nanosheets.

Size-controlled nanosheet colloids of fluorohectorite and fluortetrasilicic mica were prepared in high yield and their transitions to fluid liquid crystal (LC) phases with highly ordered lamellar structures were identified over a wide concentration range, which is a rare case for clay mineral systems.

Temperature Tunability of Dielectric/ Liquid Crystal / Dielectric Photonic Crystal Structures

Recently, photonic crystals doped with liquid crystal (LC) material havegained much research interest. In this article new ternary one-dimensional photoniccrystal introduced and studied. The liquid crystal layer of 5CB and 5PCH is sandwichedby two dielectric layers. For the first time, we use four structures SiO2/UCF35/CaF2,SiO2/5CB/CaF2, NFK51/UCF35/NPSK53 and NFK51/5CB/NPSK53. The effect ofte...

Coarse-grained treatment of the self-assembly of colloids suspended in a nematic host phase.

The complex interplay of molecular scale effects, nonlinearities in the orientational field and long-range elastic forces makes liquid-crystal physics very challenging. A consistent way to extract information from the microscopic, molecular scale up to the meso- and macroscopic scale is still missing. Here, we develop a hybrid procedure that bridges this gap by combining extensive Monte Carlo (...

Multiphase coexistence and destabilization of liquid crystalline binary nanosheet colloids of titanate and clay.

A plate-plate binary colloid system of photocatalytically active titanate and inert clay nanosheets shows macroscopically separated multiphase coexistence. Two liquid crystalline phases and one isotropic phase coexist at high titanate and low clay concentrations whereas the colloids are destabilized at high clay concentrations.

Nematic Liquid-Crystal Colloids

This article provides a concise review of a new state of colloidal matter called nematic liquid-crystal colloids. These colloids are obtained by dispersing microparticles of different shapes in a nematic liquid crystal that acts as a solvent for the dispersed particles. The microparticles induce a local deformation of the liquid crystal, which then generates topological defects and long-range f...
